Poinsettia lesson at IJP School Prepares students for Christmas

Photo Caption: Infant Jesus of Prague School student, Harper Bartelt enjoyed the story by Tomie dePaola, “The Legend of the Poinsettia.” Here he creates his own flower on Friday, December 9, 2011. Poinsettia lesson at IJP School Prepares students for Christmas The poinsettia flower pointed to preparation of Christmas for students at Infant Jesus of Prague School. Teachers, Kathleen Murphy and Renee Rajkovich paired 2 nd and 5 th grade reading buddies. They enjoyed a Tomie dePaola authored book, titled “The Legend of the Poinsettia” on Friday, December 9, 2011. It highlighted the unconditional love of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The importance of the Christmas season was addressed. The four weeks which prepared the faithful were known as Advent. Traditionally Catholics displayed a wreath, adorned with 4 candles. The candles represented the weeks of the month prior to the sacred day on December 25 th. Poinsettia flowers traditionally decorated Catholic churches during the Christmas season. After the story, students worked as teams and gathered materials. They created and decorated poinsettias. The lovely flowers lined the primary hallway of Infant Jesus of Prague School. Thematic lessons were a focus of instruction for students at the school. The Poinsettia: A History The flowers were utilized primarily during Christmas time. During the week of December 5, 2011 students of Infant Jesus of Prague School learned about the history of the botanical treasures. The beauties had a beginning as the Christmas flower of the United States in South Carolina. Dr. Joel Poinsettia brought the plant from Mexico in 1828. The plant’s decorative nature made it a favorite in churches, homes and storefronts during the Christmas holiday. It was known for tiny yellow flowers which were surrounded by beautiful red flowers. Mexicans traditionally called the poinsettia Flor De La Noche Buena, or Flower of the Holy Night.

Photo Caption: Infant Jesus of Prague School student, Cameron Moore prepares to test her hypothesis by dropping a marble into a marble maze. The maze was created by Lilly Donkel was a culmination of a unit of study on force and motion. A Marble Maze allowed classrooms the enjoyment of learning in motion during the week of December 5, 2011 at Infant Jesus of Prague School. The lesson culminated a unit of study in force and motion. Physics was learned by the 4 th graders. They shared knowledge with fellow students and they presented for the Marble Maze displays. Each experiment was carefully constructed for weeks. The project was guided by teacher, Ms. Carol Johnson. The home-made, vertically created mazes delighted young minds. Students dropped marbles into the creations. They hypothesized the speed of the rock-like weights. The event was opened up, as a feature during the school’s Open House on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 6:30 pm. Open House: An IJP, Catholic Schools Week Tradition Infant Jesus of Prague School scheduled an evening to open its doors. The event focused on a nationwide celebration during Catholic Schools Week on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 6:30 pm. This Robot is one of only 70 in Illinois. Dr. Sun demonstrated how to control the robot at a console located several feet away. The doctor uses his hands to make the arms of the robot move and operate. Students were also allowed to operate the robot. Students were challenged to stack life savers using the robots arms. Afterward, the students took part in a “Name the Robot” contest. The winning name was submitted by Gabriela Lanza, a 6 th grader, “Mr. Roboto”. A plaque with Gabriela’s name and the robots will be attached to Mr. Roboto as a reminder to all where his name came from. This was a wonderful experience.

Photo Caption: Infant Jesus of Prague School 7th grader, Aliyah Griffin reads her Character Diary on Monday, November 21, 2011. The student completed the activity based on a novel study for teacher, Ms. Nancy Szelag's course Infant Jesus of Prague School students learn from a Class-based Project Educational theorist, Benjamin Bloom (1956) stated that students compiled information together in different ways, combined elements in a new pattern or proposed alternative solutions in a process called synthesis. Synthesis, defined by the theorist, was identified as the second highest level of learning. Students of Infant Jesus of Prague School Language Arts teacher, Ms. Nancy Szelag attained a high level of learning through activities which built knowledge and skills prior to a project. The project was based upon the novel by author, Kate DiCamillo titled, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” Szelag reviewed vocabulary, read chapters aloud, checked for understanding and completed various informal assessments. The teacher offered various choices to her Junior High students for a final project. William Knox designed a model of the lead character, rabbit Edward Tulane. Joseph Piunti created a Venn Diagram which compared the character to another famous figure, Jesus Christ. Kelly Mindak built a doll as a model of Tulane and included a brief summary of the story. 7 th grader, Aliyah Griffin wrote a diary of the main character’s feelings. Requirements for the publication included appropriate format, layout and identification of chapters for the Character Diary. Teacher expectations were high for the complex study of the novel, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.”
