CATHOLICS IN POLITICAL LIFE TODAY: PARTISAN POLITICS AND RELIGOIUS IDENTITY
The Lumen Christi Institute and Loyola University present this free panel discussion in the Philip H. Corboy Law Center at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, 25 E. Pearson Street in Chicago. Panelists include: Ross Douthat, columnist with the New York Times, Melinda Henneberger, editor-in-chief of Politics Daily, Mark Stricherz, author of Why Democrats Are Blue: Secular Liberalism and the Decline of the People's Party, and a contributing writer to the blog True/Slant. Among the questions the panel will address: What does it mean to be a Catholic and a participant in American political life today? What are the reasons Catholics have voted the way they have in recent elections? What would the Democratic or Republican party look like if either were to fashion its policies upon the principles of Catholic social teaching?

The John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Association will sponsor two-days of events at Our Lady Mother of the Church Parish, 8701 W. Lawrence Ave. in Chicago, to mark the feast of Corpus Christi and the closing of the Year for Priests. Events include Mass, Eucharistic adoration, exhibits, speakers and an all-day family Eucharistic pilgrimage. Most Rev. Joseph Perry, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will deliver the homily during the evening Mass on Friday that will be followed by all-night Eucharistic adoration. Details.

CHICAGO CCHD AWARDS EVENT
Fifteen organizations in Chicago will be honored for their work in breaking the cycle of poverty when the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in Chicago awards its annual grants at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, 1351 West Evergreen in Chicago. Most Rev. Francis Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will celebrate Mass at 5 p.m. A buffet dinner will follow and during the awards ceremony Rev. James Moriarty, founder of the Chicago Catholic Campaign for Human Development, will be honored. Reservations are required and a donation of $25 includes awards presentation event and dinner.

Sponsored by the Office for Peace and Justice and its Catholic Campaign for Human Development program, this is a day for participants to learn about Catholic social teaching based on Pope Benedict XVI’s latest encyclical, Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth). The guest speaker will be Paul D. Simoneau Lt. Col. USMC (Ret.) and Director of the Office of Justice and Peace in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee. This is also an opportunity to meet the 2010 Chicago CCHD grantees and learn what they are doing to make a difference in people’s lives. This day will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 West Jackson Boulevard in Chicago. A $15 suggested donation includes all presentations, speakers and lunch.
