SAINTS -- AND ALL WHO HAVE DIED -- ARE HONORED IN SPECIAL EVENTS AT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN THE ARCHDIOCESE

 
 

CHICAGO (October 31, 2005) –All Catholic school students will attend Mass on Tuesday, November 1, to celebrate the Catholic feast of All Saints Day, but many Catholic schools will host special events to honor those who have died before or during the All Saints Day and All Souls Day (November 2) feasts.

In addition, some local Catholic schools will host special events that commemorate the Mexican and Latin-American celebration of the Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”: October 31 -November 2):

Tuesday
November 1

CHICAGO (Logan Square)-- St. Sylvester Catholic School, 3027 W. Palmer Square
During an 8:30 a.m. Mass, third graders who have spent October class time researching the lives of Catholic saints will dress as those saints and present their research on the saints to the school community.

EVANSTON – Pope John XXIII Catholic School, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church,
806 Ridge Ave.
Third graders who have each researched the saint after whom they are named or whom they term their favorite saint will enter the 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Nicholas Church in Evanston dressed as their favorite saints. During the homily, the students will stand in a circle around the altar and share information about the saints.

CHICAGO ( Sauganash) – Queen of All Saints Catholic School, 6230 N. Lemont
At a noon Mass, after the procession set to the music of "When the Saints Go Marching In," a child from each grade level will offer a brief biography of a Catholic saint chosen as that grade’s “patron saint” for the school year. Children in each classroom are making “shields” from poster board to use in the procession at Mass and to hang outside their classroom doors all year, depicting the research they have undertaken about the saints.

Tuesday-Wednesday
November 1-2

CHICAGO (Edison Park) St. Juliana Catholic School, 7400 W. Touhy Ave .
Fourth grade students will lead the procession into the 9 a.m. Mass dressed in white and carrying palm branches to represent the saints as they are depicted in the Book of Revelation. On November 2, the all-school prayer will be offered for those beloved who have died, and fourth graders will bless special “Books of Remembrance” that they will deliver to each homeroom, in which all students can enter names of family members and friends who have died. The student body will pray for all listed in the books throughout the month of November.

Wednesday
November 2

CHICAGO (Little Village) – Our Lady of Tepeyac Catholic School , 2235 S. Albany Ave.
Students will attend an 8:30 a.m. Mass for the Feast of All Souls, and to commemorate the Day of the Dead, many classrooms have assembled ofrendas (altars) on which mementos of loved ones who have passed away will be displayed.

CHICAGO (Pilsen) – St. Pius V Catholic School, 1919 S. Ashland Ave.
Students will participate in a 1:45 p.m. prayer service, and eighth grade students will complete ofrendas (altars) in their classrooms, complementing a large ofr enda situated in the main church that includes photos and mementos of beloved school family members who have died.
